The Der Markt Food Store storefront at 307 West Main Street in Red River, with its wooden gable sign and cars parked out front.

Did you know Red River's Main Street grocery carries a German name for a very Red River reason? Der Markt Food Store, at 307 West Main Street, opened its doors in June 1970, when the town was briefly trying on an alpine look. The ski area was in its tenth year, Toni and Ilse Woerndle had just turned the old S.E.B. Motel into the Alpine Lodge, and new condos carried names like Eisenhut and Edelweiss. In that moment, naming the new market Der Markt, German for the market, seemed like a good idea.

A River of Fire Down the Face: Red River's Torchlight Parade Tradition

A black-and-white photograph, circa 1980, of Red River's ski slopes rising above the town and the All Season Mall.

Did you know that on winter nights in Red River, the mountain itself seems to catch fire, in the best possible way? Skiers and snowboarders carrying shimmering red flares descend the Face, the steep black diamond run that looks straight down on town, in a slow, S-shaped stream of light, while fireworks burst overhead. It is Red River Ski Area's Torchlight Parade, and it turns an ordinary ski day into a celebration the whole town can watch.

Uncle Dick Wootton: The Mountain Man Who Charged a Toll Over Raton Pass

A sepia-toned historic photograph of Richens L. Wootton's stone house at Raton Pass, with three people standing in front.

If you have ever driven Interstate 25 down from Colorado toward Raton, Cimarron Canyon, and Red River, you have crossed Raton Pass โ€” and in the 1800s, that gateway had a gatekeeper. He was Richens Lacy Wootton, a Virginia-born mountain man known as Uncle Dick, and he built a toll road over the roughest stretch of the Santa Fe Trail and charged every wagon that rolled through. Born on May 6, 1816, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, Wootton lived one of the great character stories of the southern Rockies.
