Sitzmark Sports and Lodge: Sleep, Ski, and Fish From One Main Street Door

The Sitzmark Sports and Lodge storefront on West Main Street in Red River under snow.

On West Main Street, one stop can set up a whole Red River stay. Sitzmark Sports and Lodge, at 416 West Main Street, pairs a cozy mountain lodge with a full-service sports shop under one snow-dusted roof, right in the heart of town with easy access to the slopes. Sleep in, walk downstairs, and get fitted for the day — that simple rhythm has made Sitzmark a Main Street landmark for generations of visiting families.

The story starts with Toni and Ilse Woerndle, two of Red River's ski pioneers. Toni came in 1959 as the new ski area's first ski school director, Ilse followed the next spring, and together they turned the old S.E.B. Motel into the Alpine Lodge, complete with a small ski rental shop. As the town grew, that little shop ran out of room. In 1976 the Woerndles bought a building across the street that had housed a grocery store for years, and in 1977 they opened it as Sitzmark Sports. After Toni died in 1981, Ilse kept the business going herself until she sold it and retired in 1994.

Winter is still the shop's home season. Sitzmark rents ski packages with skis, boots, and poles, and snowboard packages with board, boots, and bindings, along with jackets, bibs, and helmets, and it handles sales and repairs as well. Reserve rentals three days ahead and the crew can even deliver gear to your condo, hotel, or vacation rental, so the first morning of a trip starts on the snow instead of in a line.

When the snow melts, the same counters turn to summer. The shop offers bike rentals, sales, and repairs, fishing licenses and supplies, and a disc golf pro shop, and it can help book adventures across northern New Mexico. Its guided fly fishing trips now headline the warm months, with an experienced guide who teaches beginners the fundamentals patiently and takes seasoned anglers to productive water on the Red River, the Rio Costilla, the Rio Grande, the Cimarron River, the Latir Lakes, and the Conejos River.

For a first-time visitor, the best move is simply to stop in early in the trip. Get your rentals sorted, ask where the fish are rising and which trails are riding well, pick up a map, and let the lodge side handle the sleeping. You will find Sitzmark Sports and Lodge at 416 West Main Street in Red River, online at sitzmarknm.com, and by phone at 575-754-2456 — a Woerndle family idea from 1977 that still anchors a Red River day, in every season.
