Golden October in Red River: elk bugles, fall color, and first snow on the peaks

KABX NEXRAD radar image showing a band of precipitation echoes over north-central New Mexico early Saturday morning.

October in Red River usually means golden aspen, bugling elk, and the quiet confidence of a mountain town easing into winter. This weekend the valley is delivering all three.

The elk, at least, keep their own calendar. The fall rut in New Mexico peaks from mid-September into early October, and through the middle of this month you can still hear bulls bugling in the high meadows around Red River, most often at dawn and dusk. The Carson National Forest surrounding town holds strong herds, and the cool air carries that rising whistle clear across the valleys. It is one of the great free shows of the mountain West. If you go out to listen, do it respectfully. Bulls are unpredictable in the rut, so admire them from a distance, keep dogs close, and never approach or feed a wild elk.

The scenery is doing its part too. Red River sits at 8,750 feet with Carson National Forest on every side, and its aspen stands are among the first in the state to turn and some of the last to let go of the gold. The stands above town are holding gold and orange now, though the highest slopes may already be thinning after the season's early turn, so this weekend is a good one for a color drive. The full Enchanted Circle, the 84-mile scenic loop that rings Wheeler Peak from Red River through Questa, Eagle Nest, and Angel Fire, is the grand tour. For something gentler, the one-mile Red River Nature Trail follows the river along the base of the mountains and asks almost nothing of you. Up high, the season has already shifted: the Sangre de Cristos picked up their first snow of the season in the first week of October, with a few inches falling above 10,000 feet around Taos Ski Valley.

Weather-wise, today is a gem. Red River will see plenty of sunshine with a high near 63 degrees, a west breeze, and no weather alerts in effect. Clouds build this evening and overnight, and Sunday turns partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers. Bring the layers, the sunscreen, and a jacket for dusk. If you are thinking bigger than Red River this weekend, note that the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta wraps up on Sunday, October 11, so the skies over the Rio Grande valley will be busy one last morning.

So here is your October Saturday: roll into town in the morning sun, walk the nature trail while the aspens are still glowing, drive a stretch of the Enchanted Circle in the afternoon, and linger somewhere quiet at dusk to listen for a bugle. Red River will be here, gold and quiet and waiting, and we will see you up here.
